In his column published in The Daily Mail on January 19, 2024, former PM Boris Johnson stated that a “Trump presidency could be just what the world needs.” He noted that under Trump, “the West will be stronger, and the world more stable.”
Recent polls by American Promise and the Tyson Group reveal Donald Trump’s increasing support, with 58% of likely voters in the South Carolina Republican primary backing him, while Nikki Haley trails at 31%.
The UK’s response, however, has been far from unanimous. Sir Richard Dearlove, the former chief of the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service who led MI6 from 1999 to 2004, stated on Sky News that a Trump re-election would be “problematic” for UK national security due to Trump’s issues with NATO.
Trump has been a vocal critic of NATO, claiming that “other members have not paid their way” and has threatened to pull out of the longstanding partnership.
A return of Trump also presents trading issues for the UK In The Observer on Sunday, Andrew Ramsay wrote that Trump “will be an aggressive protectionist, which will be detrimental for a country such as the UK that is dependent on free trade for a significant portion of its prosperity.”
Ramsay concluded that Trump will be “a clear and present danger to the UK’s vital interests in a way no previous US president has ever been.”
