It was obvious as the night unfolded: the evening belonged to Donald Trump. As the electoral map painted itself in the shades of Republican red, another group emerged as the biggest losers of the 2024 election: America’s A-list celebrities. Beyonce, Oprah, Lady Gaga, Usher, and Jennifer Lopez, the vanguards of Hollywood megaweights, all found themselves on the losing side.
From the moment Kamala Harris took the stage at the DNC in Chicago, flanked by star power spanning from the Obamas to Pink, her campaign seemed poised for a star-studded victory. It was a “vibe” election, and Harris was quickly built into a historic candidate—which, on paper, she really was: a woman, Asian American, daughter of an immigrant, and the vice president.
Yet, as the days before November 5th dwindled, polls that traditionally favor Democrats raised a crimson flag: Harris wasn’t delivering as well as she was supposed to. Still, the pundits spun their web, branding it a “close election” and predicting that Harris would no doubt win the popular vote. But as it turned out, the race was anything but close.
No Republican since George W. Bush in 2004 had won the popular vote. Even in Trump’s 2016 victory, he did so while losing it. But this time, the improbable happened: Trump seized both the popular and electoral votes, achieving this feat without the Hollywood A-list fanfare. Trump did not get along with them, and could only get Joe Rogan the Democrats once wanted to cancel.
In his victory speech in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump declared a sweeping historical achievement, proudly highlighting his success in expanding his voter base.
“They came from all quarters, union, non-union, African American, Hispanic, American, Asian American, Arab American, Muslim American. We had everybody. And it was beautiful. It was a historic realignment, uniting citizens of all backgrounds around a common core of common sense,” Trump said.
Julia Roberts, George Clooney, and the like were no match for a reality far less glamorous, but decidedly more consequential.
