Onstage at Howard University, Vice President Kamala Harris was greeted by a round of applause and chants of “Kamala.” She acknowledged that the election outcome was not “what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we hoped for. But hear me when I say, the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.”
In remarks lasting roughly 10 minutes, Harris struck a balance between disappointment and hope. “I know folks are experiencing a range of emotions right now, I get it, but we must accept the results of this election,” she said.
Recalling her congratulatory call to President-elect Donald Trump, Harris’s mention of the concession drew a few boos from the crowd. It was an acknowledgment, however, that democracy’s strength lies in the peaceful transition of power.

Harris urged those assembled not to lose hope. “It’s OK to be sad or disappointed, but please know it’s going to be OK… sometimes the fight takes a while. Don’t ever give up,” she said.
Her campaign aides huddled together, exchanging quiet hugs. Among them were longtime advisers Jen O’Malley Dillon, David Plouffe, and Brian Fallon, whose expressions reflected the bittersweet end of a journey. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser stood in the crowd, engaged in conversation. Several of Harris’s younger family members wiped away tears as they exited.
When asked by a pool reporter what’s next, Tim Walz offered a one-word answer that spoke to resilience rooted in home turf: “Minnesota.”
