The United States and Russia have reached an agreement on four key principles following more than four hours of discussions in Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday.
The principles, outlined by Rubio, include:
1. Restoring diplomatic operations: Both nations have agreed to reestablish the full functionality of their respective embassies in Washington and Moscow, which Rubio described as essential for any progress in relations.
2. Negotiating an end to the Ukraine conflict: A high-level US team will be appointed to engage in negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting and mutually acceptable resolution to the war.
3. Exploring geopolitical and economic cooperation: Both sides have committed to examining the potential for broader collaboration in the event of a settlement in Ukraine.
4. Ongoing engagement: The US and Russia officials involved in the discussions have pledged to remain actively involved in ensuring the process moves forward productively.

Rubio was joined at the talks by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, while Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.
