What’s happening now
BREAKING NEWS: President Donald Trump said Saturday that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed following U.S.-Israeli strikes.
JUST IN: Israeli sources said Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may have been killed in the large-scale U.S. and Israeli strikes, though there has been no official confirmation from Washington or Tehran. The claim comes after Iranian officials said earlier that senior leaders were “safe and sound.”
Iran has retaliated with strikes on U.S. and Israeli military sites across the Middle East after attacks hit multiple cities, including Tehran, early Saturday. Explosions have been reported in Bahrain — where the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet is based — as well as in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Qatar. One person was killed by falling debris in Abu Dhabi, while sirens sounded across Israel, including Tel Aviv, with residents warned to take shelter.
Trump’s messaging
Trump says the U.S. has begun “major combat operations” against Iran. In a recorded video message, he also urged Iranians to rise up against their government, saying, “When we are finished, take over your government.”
International reaction
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the escalation, warning it threatens international peace and security and urging an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to negotiations.
In a joint statement with the leaders of France and Germany, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on Iran to “refrain from indiscriminate military strikes” and urged de-escalation across the region.
Starmer said he wants to see “peace and security” in the Middle East and emphasized the need for the “protection of civilian life.” He added that Iran “can end this now” by refraining from further attacks, abandoning its weapons program and ending what he described as violence and oppression against its own people.
White House and Congress
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump monitored the situation overnight from Mar-a-Lago alongside members of his national security team and spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She said Secretary Rubio called members of the “gang of eight” to provide congressional notification, reaching seven of the eight members — a step that notifies leadership but does not constitute seeking authorization for military action.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the strikes for proceeding without congressional approval and called on the administration to explain its objectives and legal justification.

The mood in the International Monetary Fund’s Washington corridors has darkened. Only months ago, officials spoke with cautious optimism about global growth. J.D. Vance is having a bad week—but more precisely, he is having the kind of week that clarifies a political position he once seemed to occupy more securely than he does now.
