The United States has strongly criticized Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for accusing them of “encouraging” the war in Ukraine. Lula made the statement after urging the US to start discussing peace in Ukraine during his recent visit to China. When Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited Brazil, Lula expressed his desire to broker peace talks to end the conflict, and Lavrov thanked Brazil for its efforts.
National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, accused Lula of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda” and called his comments “simply misguided.” However, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira disagreed with Kirby’s statements.
Despite not imposing sanctions on Russia, Brazil is calling for peace talks. In contrast, Ukraine and its allies argue that an immediate ceasefire would enable Russia to retain the territory it obtained illegally through force. Last year, Russia waged a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, leading to the International Criminal Court issuing an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Lula’s comments followed his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who proposed a peace plan in February that did not explicitly call for Russia to leave Ukraine.
During his visit to Brazil, Lavrov expressed gratitude for Brazil’s understanding of the situation and desire to help find ways to resolve it.
