In a communication addressed to fellow colleagues, House Democratic Leader Jeffries has provided an update on the impending vote concerning the debt ceiling agreement. According to Jeffries, President Biden and Speaker McCarthy have achieved a preliminary agreement on the matter. This agreement is set to be finalized pending the Biden administration’s review of a legislative bill presented by House Republicans.
To complete the agreement, President Biden and Speaker McCarthy are scheduled to hold a discussion no later than 2 pm this afternoon. Subsequently, the text of the bill will be released for examination by the House, Senate, and the general public.
Later today, at 5 pm, the Biden administration will provide a comprehensive briefing to the House Democratic Caucus, covering all aspects of the agreement in order to prevent a default. Furthermore, senior members of the Biden administration will present a briefing to the House Democratic Caucus in the afternoon, emphasizing the importance of avoiding a default.
In the coming days, ample opportunities will be available for reviewing and discussing the legislation with the Biden administration prior to a scheduled mid-week vote, orchestrated by House Republicans.
In addition to the briefings from the White House, the House Democratic Caucus will convene in person to deliberate on the next course of action once the House reconvenes. Jeffries expresses gratitude towards President Biden for his leadership in averting a potentially detrimental default, and eagerly anticipates engaging in collective discussions with fellow colleagues.
For the complete text of Jeffries’ letter, please refer below:
Dear Colleague:
President Biden has announced an agreement in principle regarding the debt ceiling. I have been informed that the agreement will be finalized once legislative bill text prepared by House Republicans has been reviewed by the Biden administration.
Early this afternoon, no later than 2 p.m., President Biden and Speaker McCarthy are scheduled to speak in order to complete the agreement. Shortly thereafter, the legislative bill text will be released by House Republicans and made available to the House, Senate and American people.
At 5 p.m. this afternoon, high-level members of the Biden administration will brief the House Democratic Caucus on all aspects of the agreement to avoid a default. It is my expectation that over the next several days, there will be multiple opportunities to review and discuss the legislation with the Biden administration in advance of any mid-week vote scheduled by House Republicans.
In addition to these White House briefings, the House Democratic Caucus will also meet in person to discuss the path forward when the House is back in session. I am thankful to President Biden for his leadership in averting a devastating default and look forward to our collective discussion.
Sincerely,
Hakeem Jeffries
Democratic Leader
