Addressing the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that “Russia can only be forced into peace.” His comments underscored a broader call for international support in holding Russia accountable for its actions, which he characterized as violations of the U.N. Charter. Zelenskyy is expected to further elaborate on his vision for peace during his address to the UN General Assembly today.
Meanwhile, President Biden is hosting a gathering in New York with world leaders to launch a Joint Declaration of Support for Ukrainian Recovery and Reconstruction.
Tomorrow, Zelenskyy will travel to Washington, D.C., for a series of critical meetings with U.S. officials. According to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, President Biden is scheduled to meet with Zelenskyy at the White House on Thursday, September 26. Vice President Kamala Harris will also hold a separate meeting with the Ukrainian leader. The discussions will focus on the current state of the war, including Ukraine’s strategic planning and the nature of U.S. support in its defense efforts.
In a stark response, the Kremlin has condemned Zelenskyy’s plan to “force” Russia into peace, labeling it a “fatal mistake” that would have dire consequences for Kyiv. As reported by Reuters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow’s position, stating that while Russia desires peace, any attempt to “force it” is fundamentally misguided.
