As the Summit of the Future loomed, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, seated just beneath the press gallery in the UN assembly chamber, quietly reviewed his speech. Moments later, he delivered a sharp rebuke of the great powers’ international hypocrisy, while reaffirming Serbia’s unwavering commitment to peace and global cooperation.

Addressing world leaders in New York, Vucic, dressed in a dark navy suit, confidently articulated Serbia’s stance amidst the increasingly profound global transformation.

“I’m very happy to take part in this Summit,” Vucic began, referencing the UN’s recently adopted Pact for the Future, which aims to enhance international cooperation for the betterment of humanity. He lightened the atmosphere by sharing an anecdote from the satirical comic Alan Ford, stating he would not deliver “tired speeches” about peace being better than war. Instead, he offered a pointed critique of how the most powerful nations flout the rules they claim to uphold.

“It’s unbelievable how many lies and hypocrisies they use to brutally violate UN laws and peace,” Vucic said.

While offering his support for the Pact for the Future, Vucic emphasized the need for compromise and mutual understanding, especially for smaller states like Serbia. He reaffirmed Serbia’s commitment to its “European path,” characterizing the nation as modern but steadfast in upholding its traditional values.

Vucic also took aim at the growing influence of woke ideologies, stating that Serbia “will resist all external attempts and so-called ‘woke’ movements that impose a societal model we are expected to reach in the future.”

As the Summit proceeds, Vucic is slated to deliver another address during the General Debate, scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, the same day as President Biden.
