Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has embarked on a diplomatic mission to Washington DC, aiming to secure a crucial $61 billion military aid package.

Scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden on Tuesday, Zelenskyy is also set to engage with US senators and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson. The visit comes amidst a Congressional impasse, with lawmakers withholding future financial support for Kyiv’s war efforts.

Upon his arrival in Washington DC, Zelenskyy expressed concern over delays in future military aid, stating these were “dreams come true” for Vladimir Putin. Addressing the National Defense University, Zelenskyy declared, “Putin must lose,” underscoring the urgency of the US support.

“Russia’s war on Ukraine isn’t just about some old-fashioned dictatorship trying to settle scores, real or imagined. It’s Putin attacking that big shift that happened back in 1989,” said Zelenskyy.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, introducing the Ukrainian President, affirmed America’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine. He emphasized the critical role of supporting Ukraine’s war effort in ensuring the security of the United States and its allies.

“Ukraine matters profoundly to America’s security and to the trajectory of global security in the 21st century,” Austin said.

“We are determined to show the world that America will not flinch in our defense of freedom, if we do not stand up to the Kremlin’s aggression today, if we do not deter other would-be aggressors, we will only invite more aggression, more bloodshed and more chaos,” he added.
