LONDON — The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has officially announced that, despite the absence of concrete evidence, it believes it is “highly likely” that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner Group, has passed away.
The MoD underscored that the potential passing of Prigozhin would exert a “deeply destabilising effect” on the Wagner group. on the Wagner group, a private military company.
“Exactly two months after the Wagner Group’s mutiny, a Wagner-associated Embraer business jet crashed near Tver, between Moscow and St Petersburg,” the MoD stated.
Russian authorities have reported that the crash resulted in the death of all 10 individuals on board, including Yevgeny Prigozhin.
“There is not yet definitive proof that Prigozhin was onboard and he is known to exercise exceptional security measures. However, it is highly likely that he is indeed dead,” said MoD.
“The demise of Prigozhin would almost certainly have a deeply destabilising effect on the Wagner Group,” the formal communication persisted.
“His personal attributes of hyper-activity, exceptional audacity, a drive for results and extreme brutality permeated Wagner and are unlikely to be matched by any successor.”
According to MoD, “Wagner’s leadership vacuum would be compounded by the reports that founder and field commander Dimitry Utkin and logistics chief Valery Chekalov also died.”
President Putin addressed the Prigozhin’s death for the first time during a televised meeting with Denis Pushilin.
“I have known Prigozhin for a long time, since the 1990s. He made some serious mistakes in life, but he also achieved the necessary results for himself but also for the greater good when I asked him. He was a talented man, a talented businessman.”
