Good Morning DC,

Last night, the Democratic National Committee held a fundraiser in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and Good Morning DC has all the details.

The event was held at a sprawling estate, complete with a pool, tennis court, and guest house. About 40 guests were in attendance, seated on folding chairs and couches, eagerly waiting for the President to arrive. And arrive he did, promptly at 6:45 pm, after being introduced by Allan Camaisa, who held up a copy of Biden’s book, “Promise Me, Dad.”

Biden spoke candidly about the loss of his late son Beau, saying, “It never goes away. It becomes part of you.” He also gave a nod to his granddaughter Natalie, who plans to attend Penn in the fall.

Moving on to politics, Biden talked about his victory in the 2020 election, declaring, “Finally, even Fox News is admitting I won.” He also praised the American public, saying, “I think the general public has moved to a place where they’re generally worried about our democracy.”

But it wasn’t all serious talk – Biden shared some personal anecdotes. He told a story about Hunter several years ago showing him a photo of Biden with his arm around one of his grandkids. The photo had a caption that read, “Biden molests another child.”

Biden recalled Hunter telling him, “We know it’s going to be ugly.” That moment, according to Biden, was when he decided to run in 2020.

He then talked about Jimmy Carter and his health problems. “I spent time with Jimmy Carter, and it’s finally caught up with him, but they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough,” said Biden.

In a rare moment of vulnerability, Biden revealed, “He asked me to do his eulogy. Excuse me, I shouldn’t say that.”

Looks like this fundraiser was not one to be missed.

THE WHITE HOUSE

President Biden is set to announce new actions aimed at reducing gun violence and improving public safety through an Executive Order in California today.

The announcement comes as the President visits Monterey Park, where he is expected to unveil measures aimed at increasing background checks for firearm sales, strengthening “red flag” laws, and holding the gun industry accountable to prevent firearms from ending up in the wrong hands.

President Biden commented on the latest Consumer Price Index report, highlighting a decrease in annual inflation and his commitment to lowering costs for Americans. He praised Novo Nordisk for lowering insulin prices by 75% and urged other manufacturers to follow suit. He also expressed confidence in the economy’s progress, citing the creation of over 12 million jobs since he took office and the highest number of working age adults in jobs or looking for work in 15 years.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS

President Biden met with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in San Diego, California yesterday to talk about the AUKUS trilateral partnership and close defense cooperation.

They talk about China’s challenges and their commitment to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. One topic that was especially important to both leaders was supporting Ukraine and the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

They also talked about the ways to deepen the economic relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Biden and Sunak directed their economic teams to work together to make progress before the G7 summit, including strengthening and diversifying critical supply chains.

Biden even invited Sunak to visit him in Washington in June to continue their conversation. Could this be the start of a beautiful friendship? We’ll just have to wait and see.

The outgoing State Department spokesperson Ned Price reflected on his first briefing in February 2021 and noted how much has changed since then, including the increased number of reporters in attendance. Price expressed his appreciation for the foreign policy reporters who have made the State Department briefing room “the place to be.”

As someone who is a part of the State Department press corps and sits in the briefing room, I must say that Price’s legacy of reinstating press briefings and his genuine appreciation for journalists and journalism is unparalleled.

DIGITAL ASSETS

A bipartisan group of lawmakers plans to reintroduce legislation aimed at reforming crypto tax reporting provisions in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.

The Keep Innovation in America Act by House Financial Services Committee Chair Patrick McHenry (R-NC) and Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY), aims to narrow the definition of a crypto “broker” for tax purposes.

Additionally, the bill would limit the federal government’s ability to define what a “digital asset” is, a power granted to the Treasury Department in the IIJA.
