President Biden is announcing new actions to reduce gun violence and improve public safety through an Executive Order in Monterey Park, California. The order aims to increase background checks for firearm sales, strengthen “red flag” laws, and hold the gun industry accountable to prevent firearms from ending up in the wrong hands.
Additionally, the order directs the Department of Defense to establish principles for firearm and public safety practices through its acquisition of firearms. The President is also encouraging the Federal Trade Commission to examine how gun manufacturers market firearms to minors.
Biden previously signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law and continues to call on Congress to take further action to reduce gun violence. This new Executive Order seeks to use existing executive authority to enhance community safety and diminish gun violence.
President Biden is scheduled to give a speech on Tuesday at 3:45 PM Pacific Time. You can watch the live stream of the event in the video player below.
