G7
The first day of the G7 Summit was successful for Biden and the world leaders.
Biden announced the global partnership on infrastructure and investments, and PM Boris Johnson called on other leaders to hold firm in their long-term support for Ukraine.
The leaders of the world’s richest countries started off yesterday by mocking President Putin. The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested they should mimic the Russian leader by taking the shirts off and riding bareback on a horse.
Today at G7, the main focus is Ukraine.
NSA Jake Sullivan confirmed that the new US aid package will include new air defense systems.
I can confirm that we are in fact, in the process of finalizing a package that includes advanced air defense capabilities,” Sulivan said. “As [Biden] told President Zelensky, we do intend to finalize a package that includes advanced medium and long-range air defense capabilities for the Ukrainians, along with some other items that are of urgent need, including ammunition for artillery and counter-battery radar systems.
Jake Sullivan, US National Security Advisor
Zelenskyy, he said, spoke about yesterday’s missile attacks on Kyiv and told the G-7 that he wanted “additional air defense capabilities that could shoot down missiles out of the sky.”
Zelensky made clear at G7 that he wants to shorten the war.
“He believes that a grinding conflict is not in the interest of the Ukrainian people for obvious reasons. So he would like to see his military and those in the West who are supporting his military and making maximum use of the next few months to put Ukraine in as good a position as they can possibly be in,” said Sullivan.
Looking ahead to the NATO Summit in Madrid, Sullivan said US is “trying to resolve as many [issues Turkey has with Finland and Sweden joining the alliance]” before and during the summit.
Asked if Biden would hold a bilat with Erdogan, Sullivan said “nothing’s scheduled at the moment” but didn’t rule it out. “Let’s see how the next 24 hours unfold, there is activity occurring.”
According to a senior White House official, the goal at G7 is to “starve Russia, starve Putin of his main source of cash and force down the price of Russian.”
Talking to Jake Tapper of CNN, British PM Boris Johnson has said that the US remains a “shining city on a hill” for “rights and freedom” and a global guarantor of democracy.
