White House Correspondent Ksenija Pavlovic Mcateer gives her take on the latest news from the White House

Good Morning DC,

January 6 Committee Chair Bennie Thompson (D-Miss) accused former president Trump of “an attempted coup” and said that “the violence was no accident.”

In her opening statement, Liz Cheney said, “President Trump believed his supporters at the Capitol, and I quote, ‘were doing what they should be doing.; This is what he told his staff as they pleaded with him to call off the mob, to instruct his supporters to leave.”

In the first prime-time TV episode of six hearings, the public could see some of the never-before-seen footage and hear the excerpts from the testimonies of Bill Barr, Jason Miller, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner. Trump dismisses the hearings as a hoax and a witch hunt.

Today in DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser is kicking off the DC Values Week.

THE WHITE HOUSE

Yesterday, President Biden said that he “thought today was a good day” at the Summit of the Americas.

“I used to always kid Barack – President Obama. I’d always say to him all politics is personal, meaning that it makes a difference when. you get to know someone, whether you agree or not, it makes a difference to look in their eyes and understand a little more what’s in their heart.”

Biden told leaders that they’d found more common ground than differences.

“I hope getting to know each other better will make it easier to accomplish what we all want done because it is all personal and all the people we represent, it matters to them, deeply, to get it done.”

Today, at the Summit of the Americas, Biden will start his day with remarks on inflation and the administration’s actions to lower prices and address supply chain challenges.

In the evening, he will attend the two DNC fundraisers.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS

House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has sent a letter to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee expressing his concerns with President Biden’s nomination of Amanda Bennett to run the US Agency on Global Media (USAGM).

He requested the committee to submit additional questions for Ms. Bennett before moving forward with her nomination.

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has spoken with Dmytro Kuleba, her Ukrainian counterpart, regarding the case of two British nationals who’ve been sentenced to death for fighting against Russian forces in Ukraine.

Labour MP Alex Norris shared his thoughts on the matter.

Regarding the two Brits captured by Russia, what sorts of conversations does the foreign secretary, in your eyes, need to be having and urgently?

I mean, these, as you say, are very, very concerning moments. Aiden Aslin from not too far away from me here and Shaun Pinner, and their families that will be exceptionally concerned, we think this is a moment to demonstrate to Russia and to the international community, our unity in this country. These are prisoners of war, who have rights as combatants, who should not be, as Liz Truss says, subject to sham judgments. So what we want to see from the government is that engagement, that diplomatic engagement with Russia, to say that we expect to see the rights of our citizens upheld and that’s what that’s what must be done today.’
