UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak fasts for 36 hours weekly From 5pm on a Sunday to 5am on Tuesday, Sunak only consumes water, tea or black coffee.
“It’s true, he doesn’t eat anything at all on a Monday,” a source close to the PM told The Sunday Times.
After the report emerged, Sunak told the BBC, “I tend to try and do some fasting at the beginning of every week as part of a general balanced lifestyle but everyone will do this differently.”
Sunak, confesses to having a weakness for sugary foods, and identifies as a “Coca-Cola addict,” expressing a preference for Mexican Coke due to its use of “cane sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup.”
To offset his fasting routine, he said he indulges, “in all the sugary treats I like for the rest of the week.”
Registered dietitian and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, Clare Thornton-Wood, acknowledged that intermittent fasting could aid weight loss. However, she cautioned, “If you then make up those calories by eating more on other days and eat whatever you like for the rest of the week, you actually won’t lose weight overall,” adding a note of caution to the practice.
Sunak has previously discussed fasting, citing its significance in Hinduism. Alongside his fasting routine, he maintains a diverse fitness regimen, engaging in activities such as Peloton classes, treadmill running, and high-intensity interval training at his nearby leisure center. Post-workout, his dietary choices often consist of either a light breakfast or none at all, often comprising Greek yogurt paired with blueberries.
