The House Rules Committee is slated to conduct a hearing on Tuesday to formalize the impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees are actively overseeing the proceedings, heightening tensions just a day prior to the scheduled deposition of Hunter Biden by the Oversight Committee.
This pivotal vote coincides with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s visit to the US Capitol, where he is scheduled to meet with congressional leaders.
Hunter Biden, the President’s son, faced legal ramifications last Thursday as he was indicted in California on tax evasion charges by Special Counsel David Weiss. Simultaneously, he is confronting separate federal gun charges in Delaware. James Biden, the President’s brother, met a subpoena deadline last week.
Even as moderate Republicans express a willingness to support the impeachment inquiry, Sen. Mitt Romney conveyed to “Meet the Press” on Sunday that he had not seen evidence meeting the threshold for President Biden’s impeachment.
The core allegation, previously put forward by former President Trump and leading to his initial impeachment, centers on the claim that Biden conditioned a $1 billion loan guarantee to Ukraine on the dismissal of state prosecutor Viktor Shokin. Republicans argue that the loan guarantee ultimately benefited Burisma and, by extension, Hunter Biden.
In a move shedding light on the inquiry, the National Archives and Record Administration disclosed on Monday that it granted Republicans access to 62,000 pages of unredacted emails and attachments related to the impeachment inquiry into Biden.
Speaker of the House Rep. Johnson declared his full support for the impeachment inquiry, signaling a growing alignment among House Republicans on this matter.
House Speaker told reporters on December 5 that “the House has no choice” but to “formally adopt an impeachment inquiry on the floor.” He continued, “this vote is not a vote to impeach President Biden. This is a vote to continue the inquiry of impeachment.”
