One certainty prevails: Speaker Mike Johnson cannot afford more than three House Republicans to vote against the Biden impeachment inquiry. As the 2023 session in the US Congress draws to a close, the likelihood that Republicans will unite in support of the Biden impeachment inquiry is growing by the hour. The White House has spent the entire week on information defense, citing news sources that list all Republicans who have, so far, asserted that there is no hard evidence linking Biden to high crimes.
“You’re not going to have this president impeached based on the evidence that we’ve seen come to light,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski told Politico.
“I don’t see the evidence there,” Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito told Axios.
Departing Senator Mitt Romney, appearing on Meet the Press, contends that the impeachment lacks grounds. Despite media efforts of the Democrats to counter the impeachment inquiry grounds, it is likely that the GOP will conclude the Congressional year with the formal news of the Biden impeachment inquiry.
“We have to take the next step,” Johnson said at a GOP news conference on the Hill on Tuesday. “We’re not making a political decision. It’s not. It’s a legal decision. People have feelings about it one way or the other. We can’t prejudge the outcome; the Constitution does not permit us to do so. We have to follow the truth where it takes us. And that is exactly what we’re going to do.”
House GOP Majority Whip Emmer clarified on Tuesday that, “voting in favor of an impeachment inquiry does not equal impeachment.”
He stressed however, “We will continue to follow the facts wherever they lead.”
House Democrats are anticipated to unanimously oppose the Biden impeachment inquiry, demonstrating a greater unity than was evident among Republicans during Trump’s two impeachment proceedings.
In an upcoming closed-door session today, Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is set to testify before the House Oversight and Judiciary committees.
Joe Biden’s brother, James Biden, has been subpoenaed by the House Republicans to give a private testimony. He was scheduled to testify on December 6, 2023 but did not show up in the Congress yet.
