President Joe Biden successfully reached former President Donald Trump by phone tonight following an assassination attempt. A White House official confirmed that Biden also spoke with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Butler Mayor Bob Dandoy.
Earlier in the evening, Biden addressed the nation, urging unity and condemning political violence in America. Trump was shot by the bullet that pierced through the upper part of his right ear.
Tonight, the President is cutting short his stay in Rehoboth, Delaware, and returning to Washington, D.C. His late-night departure from the beach to the White House is unusual and signifies heightened security measures around Biden.
Tomorrow morning at the White House, Biden is scheduled to receive an updated briefing from homeland security and law enforcement officials.
According to initial reports, the shooter appeared to have been outside the security perimeter. Congress is expected to convene an investigation to address how this shooting occurred, with answers anticipated in the coming days.
