Amid concerns about President Joe Biden’s mental fitness, he held a rare press conference at the NATO summit. The conference followed a notable gaffe where Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Critics, including some from his own party, have increasingly cited signs of Biden’s decline. The press conference did little to ease these concerns. Biden stumbled during the first question from Reuters, confusing Vice President Kamala Harris with former President Donald Trump.
“Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I didn’t think she was qualified,” he said, mistakenly.
During the press conference, Biden only called on reporters from a pre-approved list. When questioned about his fitness for office, he affirmed his qualifications for the presidency, stating, “I think I am the most qualified person to run for President.”
Facing mounting calls to resign, Biden responded, “I am just going to keep moving.”
The press conference underscored Biden’s resolve to continue his presidency despite criticism and calls for him to step down, emphasizing his commitment “to complete the job I’ve started.”
The President rejected reports that he needs to go to bed earlier by simply introducing a smarter daily routine.
“Instead of my every day starting at seven and ending at midnight, it would be smart for me to pace myself a bit better,” he said.
Biden opened by praising the NATO summit as a “great success,” emphasizing collective defense post-World War II and preventing conflicts preemptively.
Regarding deterring Putin’s actions in Ukraine, Biden recalled declassifying intelligence to bolster a Western coalition against Putin’s aggression. He contrasted his approach with his predecessor’s, stating Trump had told Russia, “Do whatever the hell you want.” Biden reiterated the importance of a strong NATO for American security and pledged, “I will not bow down to Putin.”
