President Biden congratulated Leader McCarthy on Republicans winning the House majority on Wednesday evening and said he is “ready to work” with House Republicans to deliver for working families.
Republicans gained control of the House with 218 seat majority following the midterm elections. McCarthy was able to defeat Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona on Tuesday to win the GOP nomination for Speaker of the House but will have to stand a vote on a House floor in January when a new House reconvenes.
“Americans are ready for a new direction, and House Republicans,” McCarthy said on Twitter making it official that “Democrats’ one-party rule is over.”
US Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was able to secure the votes for re-election despite Trump’s attack on him and a leadership challenge from Florida Senator Rick Scott.
Although the results of today’s elections weren’t what we hoped for, this is far from the end of our fight to Make Washington Work,” Senator Scott said after he lost the leadership vote.
On Tuesday, Senator McConnell told reporters that he had the votes and today, he was re-elected as Senate leader. McConnell won the leadership vote 37-10-1 and said he was “pretty proud” of the result.
“I’m honored that my Republican colleagues have reelected me to lead our outstanding Conference. Our united team is full of energy and ideas. We’re going to fight Democrats’ recklessness and promote our commonsense conservative vision to improve families’ lives and strengthen America,” said McConnell.
In a presser following the GOP conference, Senator McConnell said the Republicans had a “good discussion about what happened in the election and what happens in the next election.”
President Biden, in his congratulatory statement to McCarthy reflected on the 2022 midterm elections.
“Last week’s elections demonstrated the strength and resilience of American democracy,” said President Biden. “There was a strong rejection of election deniers, political violence, and intimidation. There was an emphatic statement that, in America, the will of the people prevails.”
President Biden said that the “future is too promising to be trapped in political warfare” and that he would work with “anyone” to improve Americans’ lives.
