I share four “nuggets” of wisdom that the Rocky series has taught me. Refer to these when you’re going through a difficult period in your life.
1. You will Experience Difficulties in Life
Rocky Balboa encountered various hardships in the film series. This includes losing his best – friend and wife to death. Despite these setbacks, Rocky kept fighting. You too will experience hardships and trials in life. These trials will stretch your character and intellect. When you are in a difficult situation, don’t be surprised. Use this moment to grow as a person. Try to remain positive and surround yourself with people who have been in similar circumstances.
2. Don’t stay stuck in your situation; try to take it one step at a time
If you are experiencing a difficult time in your life, don’t be consumed with negativity. Try to take little steps to progress forward. No matter the circumstance, we have to keep moving. Rocky Balboa encountered an impossible situation, facing a much taller Ivan Drago in Rocky 4. Rocky knew that he had to step up his training. This led Rocky to train in Russia to prepare for his fight with Ivan Drago. You have to keep persisting, even when circumstances dictate otherwise. Have a staunch determination, that you will come out of this trial stronger!
3. Don’t Blame Others for Your Hardship
Don’t blame others just because you don’t like the situation you are in. Don’t expect others to help you either. Go to others who can mentor you through the situation you are in. Be humble enough to accept help from those wiser and older than you. You have to have the courage to accept difficult times and see the circumstance as a learning opportunity. Take the necessary steps to move forward. Throughout the film series, Rocky received mentorship from the retired boxer Mickey Goldmill. Goldmill helped Rocky see his potential in times of great adversity.
4. Believe in Yourself
If you don’t believe in yourself, how do you expect others to take you seriously? When you have confidence in your abilities, you will be able to present things in a confident manner, convince others of your ideas and more! Believe in the talents that God has given you. We are all equipped with a unique skill set. Own your body/talents. Don’t let anyone undermine your value. Don’t get caught up in the comparison game. Celebrate others’ victories but continue watering your own garden. In the film series, we see that Rocky is a go – getter. He pursued his dream of being a boxer and succeeded time and time again.
