The Mail On Sunday reported on Saturday night that Liz Truss’s phone had been hacked by Kremlin agents suspected of working for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The paper’s unnamed sources said there was fear that Putin’s agents may have gained access to UK’s top-secret negotiations with foreign allies. The hack was discovered during the Conservative leadership campaign this past summer while Truss was still Foreign Secretary, but the details were suppressed by then PM Boris Johnson.

“Boris was told immediately, and it was agreed with the Cabinet Secretary that there should be a total news blackout,” the Mail on Sunday quoted their source.

According to the news report, stolen messages included Truss’s private conversations with her former Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng as well as essential details and conversations with foreign officials about the war in Ukraine.

Labour is calling for an investigation. Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said these national security risks would have to be taken very seriously, and the Lib Dem foreign affairs spokesperson, Layla Moran, called for an urgent investigation.

“We need an urgent independent investigation to uncover the truth. Was Liz Truss’s phone hacked by Russia, was there a news blackout and if so why?”

The UK government refused to comment on individual security arrangements but said that robust systems were in place to protect against cyber threats.

“The government has robust systems in place to protect against cyber threats. That includes regular security briefings for ministers, and advice on protecting their personal data and mitigating cyber threats.”
