Mike Pence's motorcade arrived at the Star Café for a meeting with Gov Kemp at 11.45 am.
Drive in took the motorcade past dozens of shops and businesses. Some parking lots weren’t full but enough to suggest businesses were busy.
A group of about 50 or so supporters with Trump/Pence 2020 flags and signs stood opposite the Star Café. They were mostly masked.
The interior of the café is decorated with signed pictures of celebs – Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughan, various sports stars. Diners already seated at tables are maskless. Every other booth is empty and the freestanding tables look as if they have been thinned out.
VP entered with Gov Kemp and his wife and was greeted by owner Danny Hamilton, who said:
“It’s an honor to have you here. It’s a dream come true.”
He explained that is was a family business that had been running for 70 years.
VP: “This is my kind of place. I love it.”
Owner explained that he cut his staff from six to three to do takeout but is now back up to full power.
“We opened up when he allowed us to open up,” he said of the governor.
He also said he had obtained a PPP payment.
“It’s helping us out tremendously.”
Owner’s wife points out a picture of POTUS on the wall and says they saw him during a previous visit but that he didn’t come to the restaurant.
“I’ll tell him he’s got to come,” said VP.
Pool was ushered through to a second room where guitars hang on the wall along with American flags as VP worked the tables.
He entered second room with Gov Kemp and greeted a table of diners.
“We heard this was a great place to get lunch.”
Ginger Howard, boutique owner and local GOP figure:”People are coming and shopping and we are being good with our masks.”
“Thank you for your leadership,” said another diner in her party.
“Georgia is leading the way. We’re grateful to be here,” said VP before talking a little about the work of the taak force.
“We are seeing encouraging numbers all over the country.”
“I have been so inspired by the American people… They’ve made the sacrifice. You see the progress we are making as a country.”
VP then sat at central table with Gov Kemp and his wife, and pool was ushered out at about 12.05 as server Amy took orders, before being brought back in 15 min later.
VP ordered meatloaf and half a serving of pulled pork with mashed potato and gravy on the side.
“Meatloaf and pulled pork. I couldn’t decide” he said.
