Milena Pavlovic Barili: Self-portrait

Who are the Serbian women behind the stunning photographs that grace our city streets, adorn the walls of historic institutions, or capture our attention on TV? Some were celebrated icons during their lifetimes, with schools, hospitals, and streets named in their honor. Yet others, despite their incredible contributions, still linger in the shadows, underappreciated and even forgotten.

Serbian women have indelibly shaped history, far surpassing traditional roles as wives, mothers, seductresses, or mistresses. Their groundbreaking contributions span scientific fields, cultural landscapes, and the arts, leaving a lasting impact on society.

Often celebrated abroad but misunderstood at home, a courageous group of Serbian women fought against patriarchy, bureaucracy, and entrenched traditions.

International Women’s Day offers a global celebration of women, but the honor should extend beyond just one day. Their achievements, education, and resilience—which have shattered prejudices and broken taboos—prove that women deserve equal rights and opportunities for growth, both educationally and professionally, every single day.

Consider Desanka Maksimović: when news broke of a monument being erected in her honor in Valjevo, she was initially unsettled, needing reassurance that it was a tribute to poetry and simply featured her likeness.

The Great Women of Serbian Culture

Often celebrated abroad but misunderstood at home, a courageous group of Serbian women fought against patriarchy, bureaucracy, and entrenched traditions, forging paths for future generations and opening doors to new opportunities. Educated in European cultural hubs like Munich, Paris, and Vienna, many of these trailblazers returned to Serbia to share their knowledge and inspire the youth.

Dunav Insurance, as the sponsor of the exhibition Great Women of Serbian Culture, has championed the cause of showcasing the lives, destinies, and achievements of 18 remarkable Serbian women: Milica Stojadinović Srpkinja, Mina Karadžić, Poleksija Todorović, Draga Ljočić, Beta Vukanović, Nadežda Petrović, Isidora Sekulić, Jelisaveta Načić, Marija Maga Magazinović, Vidosava Kovačević, Anica Savić Rebac, Zora Petrović, Desanka Maksimović, Leposava St. Pavlović, Milena Pavlović Barili, Ljubica Marić, Ljubica Cuca Sokić, and Soja Jovanović.

These formidable women did more than inspire their contemporaries; they left an indelible mark on Serbian society, significantly shaping its development and securing its place on the cultural map of the world.
