British fighter jets intercepted a Russian maritime patrol aircraft after it repeatedly flew near a Royal Navy aircraft carrier operating in the Norwegian Sea, the U.K. Ministry of Defence said, in the latest sign of rising tensions between Russia and NATO in the North Atlantic.
The HMS Prince of Wales was sailing as part of a carrier strike group carrying about 1,500 British personnel during a NATO exercise in the high north, an increasingly sensitive stretch of water between Norway and Iceland where allied forces have sought to demonstrate readiness amid growing Russian activity.
The Russian aircraft, a Tupolev Tu-95 known to NATO as a “Bear,” approached the carrier strike group several times, flying close to the vessels and ignoring warnings to leave the area, British officials said.
The plane also dropped dozens of sonar buoys into the water, according to the ministry. The devices are commonly used to detect and track activity on and below the surface, including submarines.
In response, two F-35 fighter jets operating from the HMS Prince of Wales were launched to intercept the Russian aircraft, which later departed the area.
British defense officials described the Russian plane’s actions as “unnecessarily close, unsafe and unprofessional.”
