Donald Trump has long touted his ability to merge business acumen with politics. His latest proposal—a ‘gold visa’ program requiring a $5 million investment for a green card—is a case in point.
“We want people to come into our country, by the way, but they have to come legally,” Trump said Wednesday during a Cabinet meeting, reiterating his stance on immigration.
The plan, backed by his Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, would allow companies to purchase these ‘gold visas’ to bring in foreign workers. It’s an expansion of the EB-5 program, an existing initiative that grants green cards in exchange for investments in U.S. projects—one that Lutnick argues has been “poorly overseen” and “poorly executed.”
But this new version comes with a broader economic goal: using immigration as a tool to tackle the national debt.
“If we sell 200,000 of these gold green cards, that’s $1 trillion to pay down our debt, and that’s why the president’s doing it,” Lutnick said.
Trump, for his part, framed the proposal as both a financial opportunity and a streamlined path to American citizenship.
“That’s a path to citizenship,” he said. “People don’t want to go to other countries. They want to come here.”
