Trump-Zelenskyy call details emerged Saturday, with President Donald Trump describing his conversation with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy as “very strategic.” The remarks came as Trump offered a grim update on his separate call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We had a good call. We talked about different things,” Trump said in a gaggle with the press on Air Force One. “We had a very good call, I think a very strategic call.”
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said “We spoke about opportunities in air defense and agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies.”
Trump did not elaborate on specifics, but his tone shifted when addressing Putin.
“It’s a very tough situation,” Trump said, referring to the state of play in Ukraine. “I told you I was very unhappy with my call with President Putin. He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people, it’s no good.”
The remarks mark a sharp turn in Trump’s foreign policy messaging, as his claims of being able to swiftly end the war appear to be meeting a stalemate.
