Donald Trump has called for the federal government to take control of Washington, D.C., arguing that Mayor Muriel Bowser’s leadership has failed to maintain order and that lawlessness has tarnished the reputation of what was supposed to be the world’s capital.

“I think that we should govern the District of Columbia,” Trump said on Wednesday. “I think that we should run it strong, run it with law and order, make it absolutely flawless.”

Trump was blunt about his solution. “I think we should take over Washington, D.C,” he said.

Trump suggested that local officials were failing to capitalize on the resources at their disposal, particularly when it comes to policing.

“We could save people from getting killed. They have a great police department there. Somehow they’re not utilized properly. We should govern D.C. The federal government should take over the governance of D.C. And run it really, really properly.”

Although he said he had a good personal relationship with Bowser, the Democratic mayor of Washington, Trump made clear that he believes the city’s government is failing its residents.

“I like the mayor, I get along great with the mayor, they’re not doing the job – too much crime, too much graffiti, too many tents on the lawns,” he said, painting a bleak picture of the capital’s condition.

“It’s a sad thing, homeless people all over the place, we’ve got to take care of the homeless. But we can’t have that in Washington, D.C. When they come in to see me – like Macron is coming, the prime minister of the U.K. is coming, all these people coming over to see me. We’ll have ultimately President Xi, we’ll have everybody… You can’t let that happen.”

For Trump, the presence of makeshift shelters and visible poverty on Washington’s historic avenues is a national embarrassment.

“You can’t have tents all over your beautiful, your once magnificent houses and lawns, you just can’t do it,” he insisted.
