President Donald Trump on Monday called the people causing problems in Los Angeles “professional agitators” and “insurrectionists” and said they “should be in jail.”
Speaking to reporters at the White House after chatting with a group of construction workers at an excavator on the South Lawn, Trump weighed in on California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s clash with immigration officials.
Asked whether Tom Homan should arrest Newsom, Trump said, “I’d do it if I were Tom. I think it’s great. Gavin likes the publicity…. He’s done a terrible job. I like Gavin Newsom, he’s a nice guy but he’s grossly incompetent, everybody knows.”
Pressed on what intelligence reports say about the unrest in Los Angeles, Trump said, “The people that are causing the problem are professional agitators, they’re insurrectionists. They’re bad people, they should be in jail.”
Yesterday, he said that his decision would depend on “whether or not there’s an insurrection.” Pressed on whether he believed there was an insurrection underway, Trump said, “No. But you’ve got violent people, and we’re not going to let them get away with it.”
Today, Trump did not respond to a question about whether he would invoke the Insurrection Act.
