President Donald Trump has suggested today he may invoke the Insurrection Act to restore order in Los Angeles and other areas experiencing ongoing disturbances. “If there’s an insurrection, I would certainly invoke it. We’ll see. But I can tell you, last night was terrible. The night before that was terrible,” he told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

Pressed on what he considers to constitute an insurrection, Trump pointed to parts of Los Angeles. “There were certain areas of Los Angeles” last night that “you could have called it an insurrection. It was terrible,” he said.

The president also confirmed that he spoke with California Governor Gavin Newsom “a day ago” to urge him to “do a better job” in handling the situation. Trump noted that the Olympics are coming to Los Angeles, underscoring the importance of the city regaining control.
