President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has been told he is meeting former NBA star Dennis Rodman, but declined to say whether the meeting is connected to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Asked at the White House whether he was meeting with Rodman, Trump responded: “someone told me I am. He’s a nice guy.”
Pressed further whether the meeting was about Kim, Trump shrugged and smirked before responding.
“Oh I don’t know about that. But Dennis is a good guy.”
Rodman has a longstanding personal relationship with the North Korean leader and has made several trips to North Korea. During a 2013 visit, Rodman spent time with Kim and his family and later publicly revealed the name of Kim’s daughter, Ju Ae, after saying he had held her as a baby.
The former Chicago Bulls star also traveled to Singapore in June 2018 as Trump and Kim held their first summit, though Rodman was not part of the official U.S. negotiating team.
Trump and Kim met three times during Trump’s first term — in Singapore in 2018, Hanoi in 2019 and later that year at the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea. Their diplomacy ultimately failed to produce an agreement ending North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
The possibility of a Rodman meeting comes as Trump has signaled renewed interest in direct diplomacy with Kim. In August, Trump said he planned to meet the North Korean leader again this year.
North Korea, however, has continued to reject Washington’s demands for denuclearization. Kim Yo Jong, Kim’s sister and a senior North Korean official, said earlier that the personal relationship between Trump and Kim remained “not bad,” while insisting that Pyongyang would not abandon its nuclear program.
Trump did not say Wednesday when or where he expects to meet Rodman, what they would discuss or whether the former basketball player would have any role in possible future talks with North Korea.
