President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the Oval Office after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, calling it “a dark moment for America.” In a solemn four-minute address, Trump mourned Kirk as a close ally and “shining voice of reason,” while vowing to hunt down not only the assassin but also those who, he said, contribute to political violence.
“This is about America, and whether we will allow violence to decide the future of free speech,” Trump warned.
Over the past decade, the founder of Turning Point USA became one of the most loyal defenders of the Trump agenda, rallying young conservatives at universities, colleges, and conferences across the nation. Their alliance went beyond politics. Kirk had become a fixture at Trump family gatherings, a confidant in the movement’s inner circle.
“Charlie devoted his life to good-faith debate,” the president said, casting Kirk as a symbol of free speech under siege.
Donald Trump Jr. paid tribute to Charlie Kirk in a deeply personal message on X.
“I don’t even know how to begin to put into words the loss I am feeling right now over the assassination of Charlie Kirk,” Trump Jr. wrote. “Charlie wasn’t just a friend — he was like a little brother to me — and to millions of people around the world — he was a true inspiration.”
Calling the killing “absolutely devastating,” Trump Jr. said the loss reaches far beyond Kirk’s wife Erika and their children. “We’ve lost a leader, a fighter, and a man whose character and conviction were rare. Too rare,” he said.
“To think that his life was cut short by a brutal, heinous, evil act is beyond comprehension. It is horrible and it is heartbreaking,” he added.
