Despite the push from the MAGA wing of the party, Republicans have elected Senator John Thune of South Dakota as the new Senate Majority Leader, marking a historic shift in Senate leadership. Thune, a longtime deputy of Mitch McConnell, will lead the Republicans as President-elect Donald Trump prepares for a return to the White House.
“Republicans have a mandate from the American people to clean up the mess left by the Biden-Harris-Schumer agenda and to deliver on President Trump’s priorities — our work starts today,” Thune said to the press.
In a congratulatory post on Truth Social, Trump praised Thune’s approach and promised collaboration. “He moves quickly and will do an outstanding job,” Trump wrote. “I look forward to working with him.”
At 63 and in his fourth term, Thune brings experience and a steady hand to the position. Despite past differences with Trump, he has pledged to work closely with the president-elect, helping to drive forward the Republican agenda.
The two spoke by phone shortly after the vote, with Thune later posting on X that Senate Republicans are “excited and ready to get to work” with Trump.
“Just got off the phone with Donald Trump. Senate Republicans are excited and ready to get to work implementing President Trump’s agenda on behalf of the American people.” he stated on X.
