Aboard Air Force One en route to Washington, D.C., from Mar-a-Lago, President Trump expressed cautious optimism regarding the forthcoming peace talks in Saudi Arabia, which, for the first time, will include both Ukraine and Russia.
“We’ll see if we can get something done,” Trump remarked minutes before landing. “A lot of people died this week, as you know, in Ukraine—not only Ukrainians, but Russians. So I think everybody wants to see it get done. We’re going to make a lot of progress, I believe, this week.”
While tempering expectations, Trump conveyed optimism about the potential outcomes of the peace talks. “Let’s see what happens with the whole Russia-Ukraine thing,” he said. “I think you’re going to have eventually, and maybe not in the distant future, you’re gonna have some pretty good results coming out of Saudi Arabia this week.”
Addressing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s stance, Trump suggested a possible inclination toward a rare earth minerals agreement.
“I think that Zelenskyy wants to sign the minerals deal,” he said, before emphasizing his primary objective. “I want them to want peace.”
However, Trump noted that, “right now,” Zelenskyy and his team “haven’t shown it to the extent that they should.” He anticipates a shift in their approach, stating it will “become evident over the next two or three days.”
Reflecting on the human cost of the ongoing conflict, Trump described the situation as a “killing field” and underscored the urgency of halting the violence.
“At least 2,000 young soldiers have died this week, and this is almost on a constant basis, a couple of thousand soldiers a week,” he said. “It’s a killing field, and we’ve got to stop it. And if I can stop it, I’ll be very happy.”
Revisiting his earlier comments on the strategic positions of the involved nations, Trump remarked, “You know, I say they don’t have the cards. Nobody really has the cards. Russians don’t have the cards. What you have to do is you have to make a deal, and you have to stop the killing. It’s a senseless war, and we’re going to get it stopped.”
