President Donald Trump said Tuesday morning that the United States should cut off trade with Spain and even restrict travel, sharply criticizing Madrid during a bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“Spain is a wasted cause,” Trump said.
“Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want to have anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please, including visits… Watch them come running back,” said the president.
The remarks came as Trump met with Rutte on the sidelines of the NATO Summit, where the president made clear he was frustrated with Spain and its relationship with the United States.
Trump’s comments marked an unusually blunt rebuke of a NATO ally, suggesting that Washington should take a harder line toward Madrid by cutting off commercial ties and discouraging travel between the two countries.
At the Nato Summit yesterday, Trump has also criticized Italian PM Meloni and praised Erdogan.
