After a private White House lunch Tuesday with some of America’s most powerful technology executives, President Donald Trump laid out the rough shape of his super intelligence policy. Trump is looking at an industry largely trusted to police itself, a possible oversight committee, an AI czar to be named within days — and a new name for the technology.
“We’ve changed the name officially to SI,” Trump said.
With Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and others at the table, the president called an accord on super intelligence “morally binding” and said the administration was considering a committee to watch over the entire enterprise.
“There’s going to be a tremendous self-policing aspect.”
Trump said he is “very close” to a decision on an AI czar and expects to make an announcement in the next three to four days. He did not say who is under consideration.
Nor did he say how the pieces fit together: who would sit on the committee, what authority it or a czar would carry, or what the accord commits anyone to and who would enforce it.
When the press pool was brought in after the private portion of the lunch, the executives were arrayed along one side of a long table facing reporters, some seated and some standing, with Trump at the center. He gave a brief readout of what had happened behind closed doors and took three questions.
“We had a very, very good meeting.”
Trump called the discussion “very productive” and “extremely friendly,” casting a table of competitors as united by a common purpose.
“The one thing that we all have in common is we love our country and we love the world, and we want to make sure it’s a safe place.”
Asked whether he believes no regulation of AI is necessary, Trump said:
“Well, there’s a belief that there should be tremendous self-regulation. And we automatically have regulation with the Department of Justice, the FBI, and all of that. But the self-regulation is very important.”
Asked whether he still considers AI concerns a hoax, Trump said, “It’s not a hoax.” He aimed the charge instead at Democrats, who he said don’t want to see a “tremendous surge in growth.”
The president framed that growth as part of a race he intends to win. “We’re leading by a lot, and we’re gonna keep it that way.”
The stakes, as he put it: “Whoever wins SI is going to win.”
Gesturing toward the executives around him, Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom he met last week, “acknowledged these are the most brilliant people.”
Asked whether any binding rules on superintelligence would come out of the lunch, Trump pointed to a document he planned to sign later that day.
“Well, we’re doing one thing. We’re going to be signing a document today at about 5 o’clock renaming artificial intelligence, because it’s not artificial. We all agree on that.”
He predicted “growth like nobody’s ever seen before” and said the executives had discussed the communities where data centers are going up.
“This is a group that loves local communities… And they’re going to work with local communities [with] the data centers in particular. And they’re gonna work to make the community happy.”
That could mean supplying oil and gas, supporting education and helping people financially, Trump suggested.
“In the areas where data centers have become very rich, people have become very rich. … A lot of good things have happened,” he said.
Trump kept returning to the mood in the room.
“There’s an unbelievable feeling in this room… Sort of a feeling of love for our country.”
He did not answer a question about whether Anthropic’s IPO came up in the private meeting, saying only that the White House would put out a statement summarizing “some of the things that we did.”
