The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City has announced two free admission programs, which will take place on Friday nights and second Sundays. The Meatpacking District museum will be free every Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on the second Sunday of every month, giving patrons the opportunity to witness the exhibits, activities, scenic terrace views, and more all at no cost. Even though admission will be free, there is limited capacity, so tickets will be mandatory to enter.

The Whitney has set aside more than 10,000 tickets, which are reserved for the first Second Sundays program. On the first Sunday, to kick the program off, they held a special opening that was filled with music from Jazz at Lincoln Center, arts and crafts for children, and family-oriented exhibits.

Laurie Cumbo, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, attended the first Second Sunday and motivated New Yorkers to take advantage of the new free programs at the Whitney and other museums in New York City.

“The Whitney will be free every second Sunday of every month for the next three years,” said Scott Rothkopf, the Alice Pratt Brown director of the Whitney Museum. “It’s great for New Yorkers, great for tourism, providing accessibility to all New Yorkers.”

Friday nights will feature free admission, music, and special programming. Second Sundays will be ideal for visitors of all ages, who can enjoy art-making, activities, tours, classes, and other special events.

The Whitney recommends reserving a ticket because even though admission is free, capacity is limited. Learn more and reserve tickets
