President Yoon Suk Yeol of the Republic of Korea (ROK) is set to meet with President Joe Biden today in a bilateral meeting at the White House in the morning, followed by a state dinner in the evening. This is the second state visit for the Biden administration following President Macron’s visit last December and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the alliance formed between the United States and South Korea in 1953.
This visit is the first by a South Korean leader since 2019 and the first state visit in 12 years since President Lee Myung-bak’s visit in 2011. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared the theme of this six-day trip as “Alliance in Action, Toward the Future.”
The two leaders have had four official engagements since President Yoon took office last year, including a trilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida in Spain. During today’s meetings, the South Korean side aims to address issues such as expanding the strategic partnership, strengthening the extended deterrence commitment in light of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, economic security, and trade, specifically supply chain resilience for semiconductors.
The war in Ukraine is also expected to be discussed, as South Korea has imposed sanctions and export controls on Russia but has a policy not to deliver weapons to countries engaged in active conflicts.
President Yoon’s schedule in the US includes a meeting with tech and business leaders, visits to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Korean War Veterans Memorial, an address to a joint session of Congress, and attendance at academic events at MIT and Harvard. The president and his wife, who have six dogs and five cats, will depart for Seoul on Saturday.
An arrival ceremony is scheduled for 10 am on the South Lawn.
