The Kosovo government, in a dramatic action of unilateralism, shut down nine Serbian post offices in northern Kosovo on August 5, 2024. This act, condemned by the European Union as “unilateral and uncoordinated,” flagrantly violates agreements forged under the EU-facilitated Dialogue. The EU’s rebuke and a significant disapproval from the international community Prime Minister Albin Kurti appears, so far, has not taken seriously.
“How many red lines in northern Kosovo can Prime Minister Kurti keep violating without any consequences?” Ksenija Pavlovic McAteer of The Pavlovic Today asked Matt Miller, Secretary Blinken’s spokesperson.
“I’m not going to speculate about future actions,” Miller began, emphasizing the U.S. concern over Kosovo’s uncoordinated decisions. “ What I will say is we are concerned by the continuing uncoordinated decisions by the leadership of Kosovo. We believe they put at risk the opportunities that we have helped Kosovo create,” Blinken’s spokesperson Matt Miller shared with The Pavlovic Today on Wednesday.
The State Department spokesperson reflected on the US involvement in Kosovo —a tale of American “strong” support for Kosovo’s integration as a sovereign, multi-ethnic democracy.
We are concerned by the continuing uncoordinated decisions by the leadership of Kosovo. We believe they put at risk the opportunities that we have helped Kosovo create.
State Department Spokesperson Matt Miller
For decades, the State Department has collaborated with successive Kosovo political leaders to bolster peace and prosperity domestically while advancing Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic ambitions. Yet, under Prime Minister Kurti’s stewardship, there is a palpable concern in Washington that the current Kosovo government is jeopardizing everything the US has worked to build in the region.
“What we would encourage the Government of Kosovo to do is to return to close and constructive engagement with the United States, with the EU, with NATO and Kosovo’s other close international partners”
According to what Matt Miller revealed to The Pavlovic Today, this message has been clearly communicated both publicly and privately to Kosovo’s government.
“As I’m making this clear publicly, we’ve made that clear privately to the government as well,” confirmed Miller.
The closure of post offices in Kosovska Mitrovica, Zubin Potok, Zvečan, and Leposavić has sparked sharp condemnation from Serbia, with President Aleksandar Vučić condemning the action as a provocative move by Kurti that threatens regional stability in the Western Balkans.

This Kurti is a piece of work. A really nasty piece of work. I know the West hates the Serbs, but how they tolerate this guy when they gave him everything is beyond me. And by everything, I mean everything. Billions down the drain, and they still support the Albanians.
Or it’s the usual. Commit the crime, we’ll throw a few tantrums, and then carry on as if nothings happened. What is this obsession with Greater Albania?
