House Speaker Mike Johnson, in his debut speech on Wednesday, denounced President Biden’s border policy. During his “magic minute,” he called for “transformational policy changes” to fix the “catastrophe” on US border and curb illegal immigration.
Speaker Johnson said the “border has been deliberately opened wide” and that “more than 700,000 illegals have been welcomed” into the US since he became Speaker in October.
“American schoolchildren have been forced into virtual schools. Why? So migrants can sleep in their school buildings. Korean War veterans of the US have been booted from nursing homes that were sold to house migrants. Our streets are being flooded with fentanyl. Hundreds of thousands of children and adults are being poisoned and losing their lives. Vulnerable children and women are being exploited and trafficked by cartels,” said Johnson.
Speaking about the border deal, he said the Republicnas haven’t seen it yet. “There’s no text yet,” said Johnson. “But from what we’ve heard, this so-called deal does not include these transformational policy changes that are needed to actually stop the border catastrophe, among the reported details of the bill. Again, I’m working off reports because I haven’t seen the text. But apparently, reportedly, a new authority would be created in the law.”
President Biden already has all the tools and executive authority to shut down the border
Speaker Mike Johnson
On Friday, President Biden came out in support of a new Senate deal on border security.
This weekend, while in South Carolina, he said, “A bipartisan bill would be good for America and help fix our broken immigration system and allow speedy access for those who deserve to be here, and Congress needs to get it done.”
He added, “It’ll also give me as president the emergency authority to shut down the border until it could get back under control. If that bill were the law today, I’d shut down the border right now and fix it quickly.”
Speaker Johnson, however, voiced criticism of the border deal, specifically addressing the provision allowing the President to “shut down the border” when daily crossings surpass 5,000. He argued,“We shouldn’t be asking what kind of enforcement authority kicks in at 5000 illegal crossings a day because that number should be 0.”
President Biden said on Friday that he would shut down the border “right now” if Congress passed the proposed deal. He also mentioned on Tuesday on the White House lawn that he’s “done all I can do.”
Speaker Johnson rebuked this assertion, deeming it “not true.” He recounted informing President Biden, “Mr. President, it says very clearly, you have all the tools and the executive authority necessary to reverse the catastrophe that you have created. He has those tools right now. And he has since day one.”
With a series of rhetorical questions, Speaker Johnson closed his speech, questioning President Biden’s belief in US sovereignty and in the ‘rule of law,’ affirming that he “won’t stop” until the issue is resolved.
