As Serbia changes governments, it enters one of the most sensitive moments in any democracy: the peaceful transfer of power. The United States is making clear that it wants that transition to be orderly.

In an exclusive statement to The Pavlovic Today, a State Department spokesperson confirmed Tuesday that the United States supports an “orderly transition” from Serbia’s outgoing government to the incoming administration.

“We support an orderly transition between the outgoing government and the new government to be formed,” the spokesperson said.

At the same time, Foggy Bottom is signaling Washington’s readiness to deepen the relationship established during Vucic’s tenure with Serbia’s newly elected leadership.

“We look forward to expanding our partnership with Serbia and working with its newly elected members of parliament as we continue to build on the momentum created in the last year, including with the launch of the Strategic Dialogue,” the spokesperson told The Pavlovic Today.

The reiterated statement follows the dramatic election night of Oct. 25, when Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat to the Student List, marking a decisive political turning point for Serbia.

As The Pavlovic Today first reported, Washington has acknowledged both the preliminary election results and Vucic’s concession.

“We welcome the Serbian people’s participation in their parliamentary elections,” the State Department spokesperson said at the time. “We have seen the preliminary results, including former President Vucic’s concession.”

But there is more to Washington’s message than a diplomatic acknowledgment of the ballot box.

The State Department made clear that the political transition in Belgrade presents an opportunity to build on the relationship between the two countries, rather than interrupt it.

The reference to the Strategic Dialogue is particularly significant. Washington is signaling that the framework for closer U.S.-Serbia cooperation remains firmly in place.

For Serbia’s incoming government, the diplomatic message is clear: Washington is ready to engage, the Strategic Dialogue remains on the table, and the next chapter in U.S.-Serbia relations is already taking shape.

The next question is what the new leadership intends to do with the relationship it inherits.
