On Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump visited the U.S. Capitol for a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans, accompanied by Vice President-elect JD Vance and Senate leaders John Thune and Shelley Moore Capito.
After more than an hour of discussions, Trump emerged confident, describing the meeting as a “great success” in response to a question from The Pavlovic Today.
“We had a great meeting,” he said, emphasizing “great unity” among the Senators. “Whether it’s one bill or two bills, it’s going to get done one way or the other. I think there’s a lot of talk about two and a lot of talk about one, but it doesn’t matter. The end result is the same. We’re going to get something done that’s going to be reducing taxes and creating a lot of jobs and all of the other things that you know about.”
Trump was visibly under positive impression after the Senate gathering, calling it “a really unified meeting,” and thanked Senator John Thune and “everybody for the great turnout.”
When The Pavlovic Today asked about President Biden’s suggestion that he might issue a preemptive pardon for Liz Cheney, Trump dismissed Biden outright. “I thought it was ridiculous that he did that,” he said.
Shifting focus to the start of his second term, Trump quickly dismissed Cheney’s relevance. “But we have more important things to talk about,” he said.
Cheney, said Trump, “lost in the Republican Party, as you know, in her state, by the biggest margin in the history of a politician running for Congress. She lost by like 42 points. Nobody’s ever lost like that. So I don’t care about Liz Cheney. I care about these people,” he added, gesturing toward those around him.
Earlier in the day, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump met with the late President Jim Carter family to pay their respects at Blair House.
“They were lovely. They were really very sad, but also they were celebrating because he was a very fine man,” Trump said of their visit. “I knew him a little bit, but I knew him only as a fine man.”
Trump’s agenda appears to be gaining momentum, with Republicans rallying around his leadership as he prepares to return to the White House. On day one of his second term, Trump priority will be to close the border and deport criminals.
