Good Morning DC!

It’s Friday, and the flood of grim news has been overwhelming for the past two weeks. What’s equally concerning is that the capacity for an intellectual dialog has been scraped away, and the word “traitor” has been casually applied to any academic, foreign affairs expert (Henry Kissinger, George Kennen, Noam Chomsky, Mearsheimer etc.) who was warning the global community for years of what the NATO eastern expansion can bring to bear.

Casting dissent as disloyalty closes up the door to an in-depth debate on any aspect of foreign affairs and its complexities.

Your main stories for today are below.

How serious should we take Putin’s talk of nuclear weapons?

Today at the White House, Biden will announce new actions that will be taken against Russia.

After his remarks, the President will go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to speak at the House Democratic Caucus Issues Conference.

While in Philadelphia, Biden will tour an elementary school and talk about keeping schools safe and open, combating learning loss, and the mental health of students.

In the afternoon, the President will travel to Camp David, where he will remain over the weekend.

VP Harris is still in Europe and is going to Romania.

At 9:40AM CEST, the Vice President will meet with troops from the United States and Poland.

At 10:20AM CEST, the Vice President will depart Warsaw, Poland, en route to Otopeni, Romania.

At 2:00PM EET, the Vice President will participate in an official arrival ceremony with the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.

At 2:40PM EET, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with President Iohannis.

At 3:50PM EET, the Vice President will hold a press conference with President Klaus Iohannis.

At 5:30 PM EET, the Vice President will meet with staff from the US Embassy in Bucharest at the Henri Coanda International Airport.

At 6:10PM EET, the Vice President will depart Otopeni, Romania, en route to Washington, DC.

Reacting to Biden’s EO on digital assets, billionaire investor Mike Novogratz of Galaxy Digital said that “The executive order is welcomed engagement from the administration.” Novogratz stressed that the US is now in the window to lead the global crypto economy.

“With cross agency collaboration and public-private partnerships we have an opportunity to create a framework that allows crypto to flourish in the US and develop around the world in a manner consistent with democratic values.”

The UN Security Council will meet today regarding Russian government claims of US military biological activities in Ukraine. The US and Ukraine deny the existence of any kind of biological weapons program.

Psaki said, “This is all an obvious ploy by Russia to try to justify its further premeditated, unprovoked, and unjustified attack on Ukraine.”

Referring to the existence of biolabs in Ukraine, Zelenskyy said that they are focused on “ordinary science – not military technology,” and that “no chemical or any other weapons of mass destruction were developed” in Ukraine.

The latest satellite images by Maxar Technologies indicate that Russian troops are getting into position around Kiev.

Meta, also known as Facebook and Instagram, will allow users to call for violence against Putin and Russian soldiers. The social network has now officially become a political actor, and it is reasonable to expect that this will extend to any new conflict in the future years.

Across the pond, in the UK, Chelsea FC has plunged into chaos on its 117th birthday with the possibility of running out the cash in the next 17 days. Due to UK sanctions against Abramovich, Chelsea cannot sell the players, tickets, and merchandise.

And that’s a wrap for this Friday morning, March 11 2022. Good Morning DC will be back on Monday to bring you the latest first.
