Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, and Alsu Kurmasheva are now on their way back to the United States from Russia.  President Biden will address the nation today at noon from the White House. The address is expected to cover the details of their release and the diplomatic efforts involved.

“We’ve negotiated the release of 16 people from Russia—including five Germans and seven Russian citizens who were political prisoners in their own country. Some of these women and men have been unjustly held for years. All have endured unimaginable suffering and uncertainty. Today, their agony is over,” said President Biden.

“We are grateful for the support we had from a number of our allies who made this deal possible, in particular Germany, Poland, Norway, and Slovenia.  We further appreciate the Turkish government providing a location for the safe return of these individuals to the United States and Germany,” said Secretary Blinken in a statement today.

Washington has its own rules, although, like most rules involving power, nobody bothers to write them down. One of them is this: a foreign country can spend years being almost completely invisible in Washington until, suddenly, someone discovers it can be useful in a political fight at home. And just like that, everybody becomes an…
