House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who has had a strong relationship with President Joe Biden, answered questions on Capitol Hill today following Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race. He spoke of Biden as “transformational leader” and praised his record. Jeffries said that Biden “will go down in history as one of the greatest publics servants of all time.”
Jeffries said that, thanks to the Biden-Harris leadership, civility and decency have been restored at the White House.
Jeffries did not explicitly endorse Harris yet, but added that he and other Democratic leaders will meet with Vice President Harris “shortly” and that he is looking forward to the discussion later this week. Senate Leader Chuck Schumer is returning to town today, and Harris needs to confirm the time for their meeting.
Jeffries declined to reveal details of his conversations with Joe Biden and insisted that the content of those talks will “remain private.”
Harris is heading to Wilmington, Delaware, today to meet with her campaign staff. House speaker emerita Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Harris earlier today.
