In a resolute stance, Democrats have firmly refused to throw their support behind Speaker Kevin McCarthy as he seeks to retain his speakership. Any lingering hopes that Hakeem Jeffries and the Democratic Caucus might come to his aid have been unequivocally extinguished. The Democratic minority has exhibited no willingness to assist the Republican leader.
Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Chair of the House Progressives, emphatically proclaimed, “We will not cast our votes in any manner that could potentially rescue Speaker McCarthy,” following the Democratic Caucus meeting.
Hakeem Jeffries left no room for doubt in his position regarding coming to McCarthy’s rescue. He elucidated that Democrats harbor deep-seated mistrust towards McCarthy due to his breach of the agreement made with the President of the United States.
Jeffries further emphasized that Democrats should not provide a lifeline to McCarthy. The Democratic Leader issued a call for a vote against any procedural motion aimed at postponing the motion to vacate the speakership.
Speaker McCarthy, however, said he is confident about maintaining his position as the speaker of the House.
“Have you ever come to me on no matter what you thought I couldn’t solve, that I wasn’t confident?” He further explained to reporters on Tuesday, “You’re asking why I’m confident – because of who I am. I simply don’t give up. So, despite facing obstacles in my life and experiencing setbacks, there was a time when I was on the brink of becoming speaker and couldn’t, and many counted me out. Yet, here I am as the 55th speaker of the House. Whether it’s confidence in averting a government shutdown or securing the debt ceiling, every time there’s been an obstacle, I’ve viewed it as a challenge, and we’ve overcome it.”
When asked directly if he was confident about retaining his speakership, McCarthy responded, “I’m confident I’ll hold on.”
Democratic Caucus Chair Aguilar and Vice Chair Lieu are expected to hold a press conference today on the Hill.
