Returning to the Foggy Bottom after holidays, Secretary of State Antony Blinken is delving into the crucial policy objectives that will shape the United States’ trajectory in 2024. Talking to The Pavlovic Today, Matt Miller outlined the overarching priorities that will dominate the US agenda throughout the year, with a particular spotlight on the Middle East, Ukraine, and China.
Middle East
Secretary Blinken places the conflict in the Middle East at the forefront of his agenda. Spokesperson Matt Miller highlighed the ongoing commitment to safeguarding Palestinian civilians, minimizing harm to civilians, and delivering humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.
“We will continue to try to work to protect Palestinian civilians, to minimize civilian harm, and deliver humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people, and finding an ultimate end to this conflict that provides real security, durable security for the Palestinian people and for the Israeli people, while trying to bring hostages home and preventing the conflict from spreading,” Miller told The Pavlovic Today.
Ukraine
The United States remains steadfast in supporting Ukraine against the relentless onslaught of brutal attacks orchestrated by Russia during the Christmas holiday.
“It’s why it’s so important that Congress take immediate action to – when they return to pass the President’s supplemental funding bill,” Matt Miller told The Pavlovic Today.
China
The US will persist in collaborative efforts with allies and partners to counter the
“coercive actions” exhibited by China towards its neighbors. The emphasis is on managing the relationship with China responsibly and appropriately.
“ If you look back at the situation when the Secretary entered office I guess a little under three years ago – not quite three years ago at this point – we saw a world that was fractured, that was not able to respond in a united way to the role that China was playing in the world, and the increasingly disparate vision from the West that China was presenting. You have seen that completely reversed under our tenure,” said Matt Miller.
As the 2024 election year unfolds, Blinken’s priorities align closely with the Biden administration’s agenda, which includes countering fentanyl and addressing migration in a “responsible” manner.
