In a historic turn of events, members of the House of Representatives have voted to remove Kevin McCarthy from his position as Speaker of the House, marking the first such instance in US history. This unprecedented move occurred as several members of McCarthy’s own party took action against him. As a result, Patrick McHenry has assumed the role of Speaker pro tempore of the House.
The vote to oust McCarthy came after he served as Speaker for 269 days. A total of 8 Republicans and all Democrats present in the House voted in favor of his removal. The final tally of the vote stood at 216 in favor of ousting McCarthy and 210 against, delivering a significant blow to his leadership within the House.
This development is expected to have far-reaching implications for the dynamics within the House of Representatives and the broader political landscape in the United States.
