House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued a statement today condemning the Trump administration’s push to dismantle the Department of Education, calling the move “a reckless, foolish and vicious act designed to rip away high-quality education from our most vulnerable children.”

Jeffries accused President Donald Trump and House Republicans of using the issue to “disorient and distract the American people from the fact that costs are rising,” while simultaneously undermining the country’s economic stability.

“Donald Trump and House Republicans are crashing the economy in real time and driving the nation into recession,” he warned.

The proposed cuts, Jeffries said, would have dire consequences for students across the country.

“Teachers will be fired, class sizes will soar and kids with disabilities will be left behind.”

Jeffries also emphasized that the Department of Education was created by an act of Congress and cannot be unilaterally dismantled by the executive branch.

“The Trump administration is breaking the law,” he declared. “Democrats will continue to aggressively push back in Congress, the Courts and across our communities.”
